What Size Mini Excavator Do I Need?

Choosing the right mini excavator for your job is crucial for maximizing efficiency, saving time, and reducing operating costs. Mini excavators have become a go-to machine for contractors, landscapers, and DIY enthusiasts alike due to their compact size and versatility. But with so many options on the market, how do you determine the right size for your project?

1. Understand Your Project Scope

The first step in choosing the right mini excavator is to fully understand the scope of your project. Ask yourself:

  • What kind of material will you be digging or moving (soil, clay, gravel, etc.)?
  • How deep do you need to dig?
  • Is the work in a confined space?
  • Will you be working indoors or outdoors?

For smaller residential or landscaping projects, such as digging trenches for irrigation or planting trees, a 1-2 ton mini excavator may suffice. However, for larger construction tasks like foundation digging or heavy material moving, you’ll need something more robust, possibly in the 3-5 ton range.

2. Digging Depth & Reach

Each mini excavator model comes with specific specifications for maximum digging depth and reach. A standard mini excavator can dig to a depth of around 6-10 feet. If your project requires deeper digging, you’ll want to opt for a machine that can handle a greater depth.

For example:

1-2 ton mini excavators typically offer a maximum digging depth of around 5-7 feet.
3-4 ton models can dig up to 10 feet, making them more suitable for deeper residential or light commercial projects.
5-6 ton models offer even deeper reach, often exceeding 12 feet, perfect for larger excavation jobs or commercial construction sites.

3. Consider the Working Space

One of the key advantages of mini excavators is their ability to work in tight spaces. For jobs in urban areas, small backyards, or inside buildings, you’ll need to pay attention to the excavator’s width and tail swing.

  • Zero Tail Swing models are perfect for confined spaces, as they can rotate without the back end of the machine extending beyond the tracks, minimizing the risk of accidental collisions.
  • Reduced Tail Swing models offer a little more power and stability but are still compact enough for tight spaces.

If space is a major constraint, consider a model with a retractable undercarriage, allowing you to reduce the machine’s width when necessary.

4. Lift Capacity & Power

Lift capacity is another important factor to consider, especially if you plan to use the mini excavator for more than just digging. Look at how much weight the excavator can lift at different points in its reach.

For example, a small 1-ton mini excavator may have a maximum lift capacity of around 500-1,000 lbs, while a 5-ton model can lift more than 4,000 lbs. If your project involves lifting heavy loads, such as concrete slabs or large rocks, you’ll need a machine with higher lift capacity and hydraulic power.

5. Attachments & Versatility

Think about whether you’ll need attachments like augers, hydraulic breakers, or grapples. Heavier models (3 tons and up) generally support a wider range of attachments, making them more versatile. However, if your job is more straightforward, such as trenching or light digging, you may not need all the bells and whistles a larger machine provides.

6. Transport & Accessibility

The ability to easily transport the excavator to and from job sites is often overlooked. Smaller excavators (1-2 tons) are typically light enough to be towed with a standard truck and trailer. However, as you move up in size, you’ll need to ensure you have the proper equipment to transport the machine safely and legally.

Additionally, be sure the excavator you choose can easily access your job site. If there are narrow gates, tight corners, or height restrictions, you’ll want to make sure the machine’s dimensions fit.

Finding the Right Balance

Choosing the right mini excavator size is all about finding the balance between power, reach, and maneuverability for your specific project.

Small Projects (yard work, light trenching): 1-2 ton excavators
Medium Projects (pipe laying, drainage): 3-4 ton excavators
Large Projects (small-scale construction, deep excavation): 5-6 ton excavators

By taking the time to assess your project needs, you’ll be able to find the perfect mini excavator to help you get the job done efficiently. Ready to find the right fit for your next project? Browse our mini excavators for sale and get started today!

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to some questions you may have about Hitachi mini excavators

How Much Does a Hitachi Mini Excavator Cost To Buy?

Hitachi equipment, especially the mini excavators, are very affordable. You can get one for your construction site, even on a budget. Decent mini models cost anywhere between $1000-$19000 depending on several factors.

Naturally, new machines will cost a lot more than the used ones. When shopping around, remember to watch the hours because they point to the age of an excavator. Other factors that determine construction equipment prices include the engine and bucket size. More specifications translate to higher costs.

Also, newer models might cost you more compared to second-hand models.

How Long Do Hitachi Mini Excavators Last?

Pay attention to the hours when buying a mini excavator, especially the used ones. A top-of-art, well-maintained Hitachi Mini Excavator should live up to the 10,000 hours threshold. However, they can live longer or break down too soon, depending on how well you care for them. Those used in rough conditions with poor maintenance only live up to around 8000 hours.

The rule of thumb is to buy a compact machine mainly manufactured less than four years ago. The hour meters should read a number below two thousand. This means the compact excavator is still new and, therefore, in top shape. Additionally, you can enjoy recent technology and more service for a slightly lower price than getting a new one.

What is more, Hitachi understands you need enough time to complete the project. Therefore, Hitachi mini excavators have an extended warranty for every machine part. The warranty is valid two years from delivery or when the excavator reaches the two thousand mark, whichever comes first. This way, you can keep working with confidence, knowing that the equipment will not break down sooner than expected.

What Is the Cheapest Hitachi Mini Excavator?

Smaller models are cheap, going for around $30,000 when new. The bigger new models can fetch as much as $600 000 depending on the model and extra features. You can get a used one at lower prices.

Where Are Hitachi Mini Excavators Made?

Hitachi owns efficient modern factories located in the Netherlands and Japan. Hitachi Construction Machinery has operated in Europe for the last five decades on behalf of the mother company Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. Ltd. The subsidiary company first began operations in Oosterhout with only five employees, including Mr. Okajima.

These companies produce all Hitachi construction equipment, including mini excavators and the associated spare parts and attachments.

What Engine Is in a Hitachi Mini Excavator?

A Hitachi Mini Excavator is fitted with an Isuzu 6HK1 engine which features SRC, CEGR, and DOC for maximum performance. The Isuzu 6HK1 engine is a successor of the ZX290LC-5 engine and delivers 32 percent more engine power at 24.9 horsepower. Moreover, all Hitachi mini excavator engines have attained the Tier 4-Final standards, meaning they are energy efficient and leave behind a low carbon footprint.

The modern engines feature a Hitachi hydraulic system to enable top productivity and efficiency on any construction site. The small engines fit nicely on the chassis reducing the tail swing. This results in a compact machine with adjustable tracks that fits exceptionally well in tight spaces.

How Much Does a Hitachi Mini Excavator Weigh?

These machines are versatile and all-round, meaning they serve many applications. Hitachi mini excavators can weigh anywhere between 2000 pounds and 12000 pounds, depending on the make and model. The bigger the compact excavator, the more the weight. The weight will also depend on the type of tracks the machine uses. For instance, the steel tracks versions tend to be heavier than the rubber tracks versions.

Don’t let the light weights discourage you. Hitachi compact excavators are powerful, easy to operate, and require minimal maintenance to deliver exceptional performance.

Hitachi mini excavators are compact and powerful. The ZX10U-6 is the lightest in this series, with a minimum width of 30 inches and a reduced tail swing radius of 32.48 inches. Note that the minimum width can be extended to suit your functions using a blade and an adjustable undercarriage. Additionally, the three-cylinder engines are powerful enough to complete even the toughest and most challenging excavation tasks.

Hitachi has something for everyone considering that they produce heavier models depending on the task. The ZX60USB-5 compact excavator weighs as much as 13,547 pounds. This means a bigger engine and more power to counter the toughest construction tasks. Another cool feature in Hitachi compact excavators includes the EGR or exhaust gas recirculation which reduces the NOX making the ZX60USB-5 more efficient.

Hitachi Construction Machinery understands that you need to adapt your excavator to suit a variety of functions. Therefore, the models come with hook attachments and wedge-style couplers. This allows you to use different attachments such as breakers, buckets, and augers.

Are John Deere Mini Excavators Made by Hitachi Mini Excavator?

Hitachi and John Deere have a supply relationship that dates back to the early 60s before the two decided to start a joint manufacturing venture in 1988. The joint manufacturing venture aimed to produce excavators in the new plant located at Kernersville, NC. The two increased their cooperation and production relationship by establishing the forestry wing machine department. Langley, BC, would host the Deere-Hitachi Specialty Products.

The two would continue with their joint production efforts in 2001. They added the Deere-Hitachi Brazil production plant in Indaiatuba, which boosted their distribution and marketing strategies in the Americas.

If you have seen Hitachi excavators in John Deere showrooms and vice versa, they were not there by accident. Depending on the location, one company is always marketing and supplying for the other. The two have had a successful mutual relationship in the American continent, as evidenced by the John Deere Construction and Forestry Division & Power Systems.

However, the two companies, John Deere and Hitachi, decided to split and end their joint marketing agreements and manufacturing ventures. The new agreements took effect earlier in 2022 after regulatory approval. The new supply agreements and the new license only allow John Deere to supply Deere branded equipment. Hitachi is now a separate entity and will supply Hitachi branded construction equipment only.

Under the new agreement, John Deere will dominate the branded excavator market in the Americas. For instance, John Deere will take over the Deere-Hitachi production factories in Canada, British Columbia, Kernersville, NC; Langley, and Indaiatuba, Brazil.

John Deere now only manufactures their own forestry and construction excavators currently produced in the three joint factories. The factories taken over by John Deere will cease the production of Hitachi excavators. However, John Deere will still offer construction equipment from both companies because of a supply agreement with Hitachi.

In contrast, Hitachi terminated their Americas’ marketing arrangement with John Deere. Hitachi will now distribute their own branded equipment in the Americas, which John Deere previously did.

What Is the Best Hitachi Mini Excavator?

The Hitachi ZX10U-6 is the smallest yet most efficient mini excavator. The compact excavator has an impressive power output of 12.9 horsepower, enough to complete small projects in time. It has an operating weight of 2447 pounds meaning it can work on the brittle ground that other heavier machines cannot access.

Additionally, the compact excavator can dig up to 5 feet deep and has a maximum reach of 10 feet 7 inches. It packs all the good features of Hitachi, such as a short tail swing and environmentally friendly, Tier-4 engine.

How Much Is a New Groundhog Mini Excavator?

The price of a new Groundhog mini excavator starts from as low as $16900, depending on several factors such as size, weight, engine power, and model.

What Factors Should I Consider When Buying a New Groundhog Mini Excavator?

With a wide range of equipment to choose from, you may get confused if this is your first time purchasing these machines. Here are a few guidelines to consider:

Operating Weight: The mini diggers’ operating weight determines the jobs they can do and the amount of material they can lift. Therefore, it is important to look at the written specifications before purchasing. Machines with higher operating weights can handle rough, heavy-duty projects that their lighter counterparts cannot manage. The average operating weight of a mini digger should not exceed 12000 lbs or fall below 15000 pounds.

Bucket Size: The bucket is the scoop-like structure at the end of the arm. The bucket size shows how much material you can displace with each scoop. Pay a lot of attention to the bucket size because different models have different capacities.

Bigger digging projects often need a larger bucket to save time. However, you can pick something with a small digging bucket if your project involves moving materials around. You can also check the attachment size depending on whether you want to scoop materials or dig to specific depths.

Digging Depth: Mini excavators come with different digging attachments, some smaller or more prominent than others. You should consider the amount of digging you need to complete the projects. Some projects will need deeper digging. Ensure that the mini excavator model you choose can complete the task comfortably.

Get a model with a longer boom if you want to attain greater digging depth.

Arm Length: The arm’s length is another key factor when purchasing a mini excavator. The arm length determines the distance the mini digger can reach, which is vital when working in tight spaces.

Models with shorter arm lengths are especially suited for working in limited spaces.

Wheels/Tracks: Mini excavators move around with the help of either wheels or tracks. When buying a mini excavator, know that each has its pros and cons. For instance, tracks offer better traction and stability in rough conditions. However, tracks are difficult to maneuver in certain terrains.

On the other hand, wheels offer less traction and stability but are easily maneuverable.

Model Size: As the name implies, mini diggers are small. However, the models differ in size and weight. Consider the size of your construction site before making a choice.

Choose a model that can easily pass tight spaces, such as doorways, when completing daily tasks.

Some mini diggers are more compact, while others are quite large. Choose a machine that matches your specific needs.

Price: People first consider this when choosing heavy equipment without even looking at the specifications. Note that price is an important factor because it will determine the size of the model you will get and also the capabilities. Different brands have different price tags for their micro diggers, so you need to choose.

Cheap does not always mean good. Stick as close as you can to the budget you drew before when started shopping. Expensive micro diggers may have more features than cheaper ones. Further, don’t sacrifice quality for the price.

Maintenance: All heavy construction equipment needs regular maintenance to last their maximum lifespans. A properly functioning machine is crucial for utmost productivity and efficiency on the site. Like full-size excavators, the mini excavators also need regular upkeep.

Luckily for you, mini excavators have small sized fewer moving parts. Therefore, their maintenance routine is not as demanding as their larger counterparts. Regular maintenance ensures you achieve the given timeline due to a lack of glitches.

Safety Features: Safety is paramount at every construction site. It would help if you got a mini digger that offers enough safety features to guarantee the security of the operator and those around the machine. Mini diggers offer several safety features depending on the model and the price.

Safety features include rollover protection, emergency cut-off switches, and seat belts. Get a Groundhog model with safety features matching your needs.

Bobcat E26: A Comprehensive Review and Buyer’s Guide https://buyfleetnow.com/news/bobcat-e26-a-comprehensive-review-and-buyers-guide https://buyfleetnow.com/news/bobcat-e26-a-comprehensive-review-and-buyers-guide#respond Wed, 28 Aug 2024 12:27:14 +0000 https://buyfleetnow.com/?p=22937

We can’t talk about construction equipment without mentioning Bobcat. The brand has made a name for itself by manufacturing tough, versatile, and reliable equipment. They specialize in a variety of equipment like tractors, telescopic handlers, utility vehicles, and excavators. In this review, we will be looking at the Bobcat E26 Model. This compact equipment has been designed to perform a variety of excavation tasks. Let’s delve further into its capabilities.

Bobcat E26 Specs & Key Features

Technical Specifications

Below is a rundown of E26 Specifications

Engine

  • Emissions Tier (EPA): Tier 4
  • Engine Fuel:
  • Maximum Governed RPM: 2,500 rpm
  • Horsepower: 24.8 hp
  • Turbocharged Engine: NO
  • Optional Turbocharged Engine: N/A

Note that a higher RPM can be very beneficial in heavy digging because it means more power and quick working time.

Performance

  • Operating Weight: 6,489 lb
  • Weight class: 9 t
  • Travel speed: Low 3.2 mph and high 1.8 mph
  • Arm digging force: 3,547 lbf
  • Bucket digging force: 5,652 lbf
  • Rated lift capacity: 2,359 lb
  • Lift radius: 118 inches
  • Boom swing (Left): 70°
  • Boom swing (Right): 55°
  • Max dig depth 114.4 in
  • Max dump height: 129.6 in
  • Max reach at ground level: 192 in

Considering it’s a mini excavator, the Bobcat E26 weight (2.9 t) is enough to stabilize the equipment. The dual travel speed allows you to move at the pace you prefer. You can pick the low range for tasks like dirt pushing and slot dozing, or high speed for increased mobility.

The swing boom, which rotates 70° to the left and 55° to the right, gives this excavator flexibility to dig around obstacles. As a compact excavator, it has a limited digging depth (114.4 inches) and a small lifting capacity. (2,359 lb). That means the equipment is limited to small to medium-duty jobs.

Advanced Features and Technologies

One of the reasons the Bobcat E26 stands out is because of its advanced features and technologies that make it an efficient piece of equipment on the job site.

Auto-Shift: This feature allows an automatic speed transition. The excavator automatically shifts from high to low speeds or vice versa, giving you optimum travel performance.

Auto-Idle: The feature makes it easier to pause your work whenever you need a break or want to communicate with others on the site. It will help you save fuel as well. To resume work, move the joystick control, and the excavator will return to the recent throttle position. You can turn this feature on or off whenever you please.

Fingertip Boom Swing Control: This feature lets you make movements with minimum effort enabling precise results with less fatigue. For this feature, you’ll use the rocker-style thumb switch on the left joystick, which is a better alternative than using foot pedals to control the boom swing.

Selectable Auxiliary Hydraulic Flow: Bobcat E26 has an operating pressure of 2610 psi and a pump flow capacity of 12.5 gal/min (45l/min). This feature allows you to pick an auxiliary flow rate that matches a specific attachment, such as an auger drive unit or bucket.

In-Cab Comfort Features: When it comes to in-cab comfort, Bobcat doesn’t compromise. The cab has been designed for comfort, ensuring less fatigue even on days you have to do long shifts. There is plenty of legroom and headroom, an ergonomic seat, and adequate lighting for increased visibility. Plus, with the optional heated seat, nothing will slow you down.

Performance Review of Bobcat E26

Here is a short performance review of this equipment.

Efficiency and Productivity

Despite its compact size, Bobcat E26 is a powerful machine that will take your performance to the next level. This equipment was designed with fuel efficiency in mind. With a fuel tank capacity of 9.1 gallons (34L), you can operate the equipment for longer hours without refueling. This saves time, reducing the overall cost of operating the machine.

In addition, you will find features designed to enhance your productivity at the job site. Some of them include the following.

  • In-track swing frame: Ensures the swing castings and cylinders stay within tracks when you’re digging in an offset position. This helps you dig against obstacles.
  • Protected components: The E26 is equipped with protected hydraulic lines, a durable tailgate, and smart hose routing to prevent the equipment from damage, reducing downtime at a job site.
  • Simple machine tie-down: The E26 has four tie-down points that are easily accessible, allowing you to secure loads quickly and start your job quickly.
  • X-Frame undercarriage: The x-frame undercarriage comes with great ground clearance enhancing your performance in challenging conditions. Dirt and other materials can quickly pass under the equipment, leaving less debris and making cleanup a breeze.
  • Integrated slew brakes: They hold the load steady on slopes to allow accurate placement.

Versatility and Adaptability

The Bobcat E26 mini excavator is a versatile tool for handling different jobs. You can use it for material handling, demolition, landscaping, river dredging, drilling holes, and many other projects. You can also can use different attachments based on the job you’re doing. Some of the attachments you can use include the following.

  • Auger driver
  • Tilt bucket
  • Grapple bucket
  • Grading bucket
  • Trenching bucket
  • Hydraulic thumb

Operating Experience

In most excavation jobs, you’ll probably be seated for 8+ hours. That means you need a comfortable place to sit to reduce fatigue. Aside from that, safety is key. This is heavy equipment, and one wrong move can injure someone or damage property. Let’s take a look at the operating experience you can expect with the Bobcat E26.

Operator Comfort and Ergonomics

The Bobcat E26 has been designed with operator comfort in mind. The company recognizes the importance of a comfortable working environment, so the machine has a spacious cabin and ergonomic controls.

The spacious cabin provides enough room to move around, giving you a sense of freedom as you work. On the other hand, the controls are well-positioned to minimize strain and fatigue, allowing you to work long hours without discomfort. In addition, the hydraulic system has been designed to reduce noise and vibration for a comfortable working environment.

Safety Measures and Precautions

Bobcat E26 is equipped with safety features to prevent injuries on sight or damaging the equipment. For example, the cab has large windows and well-placed mirrors, ensuring operators have a clear view of their surroundings. This reduces the risk of accidents. In addition, the minimal tail swing reduces the risk of damaging the equipment or surrounding objects.

It’s important to adhere to this equipment’s safety practices to promote a safe working environment. For example, don’t exceed its load limit to keep the equipment and service the equipment as needed to keep it in good shape.

Maintenance and Servicing

Like any other equipment, maintenance is vital to ensure optimum performance. Thankfully, maintenance is easy. The smart layout and wide opening give you access to important components and enough space to work with.

Some regular maintenance checks for this equipment include the following.

Every 10 Hours (Before Using the Excavator)

  • Check engine oil level and add if needed
  • Check the condition of engine air filters and air system
  • Check the coolant level in the engine cooling system and ass coolant if needed
  • Clean and replace seat belt retractors if needed

First 50 hours

  • Change fuel filter
  • Replace engine oil and filter
  • Check drive belts and replace them if needed

You will also need to grease the swing bearing every 50 hours. For more information on maintenance, check Bobcat’s service and maintenance page.

One of the major maintenance problems is a hydraulic system malfunction, such as fluid leaks, reduced pressure or power, and overheating. Inspecting the hydraulic component routinely will prevent this problem. Another issue is undercarriage damage which occurs because of debris and dirt. If left unchecked, the equipment can fail.

FleetNow Inspect simplifies the inspection process, eliminating paperwork and ensuring accurate reports. Its user-friendly interface allows in-shop & on-site inspections, saving time and effort.

Here is a Review & Walk-Around of the Bobcat E26:

Conclusion

Bobcat E26 is a compact and versatile piece of equipment designed to handle various tasks. Its small size allows it to work in confined spaces, and its solid construction ensures it lasts a long time. That said, since it’s a mini excavator, it has a limited digging depth and lower lifting capacity.

So, is this equipment right for you? It will depend. If you’re doing heavy-duty excavation jobs, a more powerful excavator will do. But for small or medium-duty excavation works, the Bobcat E26 will do just fine.
