5 Most Common Scissor Lift Problems To Avoid

Scissor lifts are essential equipment in various industries, from construction to maintenance. However, without proper care and attention, they can encounter issues that lead to costly repairs, downtime, or even accidents. Knowing the most common problems and how to avoid them can keep your equipment in top condition and ensure a longer lifespan.

1. Lack of Regular Maintenance

Routine maintenance is essential to the safe and efficient operation of a scissor lift. Operators should conduct daily pre-use inspections to identify any visible issues such as loose parts, leaking fluids, or abnormal sounds. But in addition to these daily checks, quarterly and annual inspections performed by qualified technicians are crucial for spotting deeper mechanical or electrical problems before they become serious. These scheduled inspections help ensure that your lift remains safe to operate and compliant with industry regulations. Download our free Scissor Lift Inspection Checklist here.

Regular maintenance not only ensures smooth operations but also helps detect small problems that could become major repairs down the line. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidelines and get professional technicians involved for the more technical inspections.

2. Water Intrusion & Corrosion

“Corrosion is what kills scissor lifts,” says Jeremy Nelson, a Field Service Technician at OHR Rents. Water exposure, especially over time, leads to corrosion on key components like rails and battery connectors. This becomes an even bigger issue if the scissor lift is exposed to the elements without a chance to dry out. In colder climates, water inside rails can freeze, causing them to split or warp.

While hydraulic systems are generally robust, connectors and other electrical components are highly susceptible to damage from water. Proper storage and prompt drying out of any moisture that accumulates are crucial to preventing these corrosion issues.

3. Storing the Scissor Lift Outdoors

One of the most common mistakes made by equipment owners is storing scissor lifts outdoors. Exposure to rain, snow, and fluctuating temperatures can cause rust and corrosion, especially on metal components and battery terminals. In cold weather, pivot points and sliding mechanisms can dry out, leading to stiffness or malfunction. Moreover, salt used on roads and outdoor surfaces during the winter can find its way into the lift’s mechanisms, accelerating the corrosion process.

Whenever possible, store your scissor lift indoors in a dry, temperature-controlled environment. If that’s not feasible, cover the lift with a waterproof tarp and regularly inspect it for signs of weather-related damage.

4. Poor Battery Maintenance

The battery is the lifeblood of an electric scissor lift, and poor battery maintenance can result in costly repairs or shortened battery life. Regularly cycling the battery—charging it fully and discharging it during use—is essential to keeping it in optimal condition. Overcharging, undercharging, or neglecting water levels in deep-cycle batteries can significantly shorten their lifespan.

If the lift is going to be stored for a while, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for storage to avoid unnecessary battery drain. Check water levels regularly, and ensure that the batteries are clean and free from corrosion. These small but important steps will ensure that your battery remains functional and lasts for years.

5. Debris Build-Up on the Job Site

Job sites are often cluttered with debris, and scissor lifts are not immune to picking up stray materials. Screws, nails, string, and other items can easily become lodged in the wheels or undercarriage, leading to damage to seals, tires, or even motors. Additionally, paint overspray or dirt getting into the rollers and controls can cause components to stick, reducing the overall effectiveness of the lift.

To prevent this, operators should be mindful of the surfaces they drive over and keep the scissor lift’s deck free from dirt and debris. Cleaning off any stuck-on materials and maintaining good housekeeping practices on the job site will significantly reduce the risk of damage.

LGMG strives to adhere to all safety, quality and environmental standards for high-end lift equipment.

What Scissor Lifts Does LGMG Make?

LGMG manufactures several different types of scissor lifts in America, as follows:

  • Electric Short (SS Series)
  • Electric Slab
  • Hydraulic Slab
  • Electric Rough Terrain
  • Diesel Rough Terrain

LGMG Electric Short Scissor Lifts (SS Series)

The shortest electric scissor lift made by LGMG is the SS1230E. It has a 12′ platform height and is suitable for indoor and light outdoor work. It’s fully electric and has a lift capacity of 530 pounds.

The SS1432E has a 14′ platform height and is designed for indoor use only. It has a lift capacity of 510 pounds. The SS1932E is LGMG’s tallest Short Series scissor lift, with a maximum platform height of 19′ and a lift capacity of 510 pounds. The SS1932E is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

LGMG Hydraulic Slab Scissor Lifts

LGMG also manufactures a series of hydraulic slab scissor lifts that correspond to the electric versions. These hydraulic models have identical system specs as their all-electric counterparts, including maximum platform heights and lift capacities. Hydraulic lifts use a series of hoses and hydraulic fluids to raise and lower the lift, while the electric models rely on an electric motor system.

The main difference between a hydraulic lift and an electric one is that a hydraulic system uses more of a power drain on the machine’s battery. With a hydraulic slab scissor lift, the owner will have to stop and recharge the battery more often. However, hydraulic slab scissor lifts can cost considerably less than their all-electric counterparts.

The hydraulic slab scissor lifts that LGMG manufactures are the AS1930, AS1932, AS2632, AS2646, AS3246, and AS4046. As mentioned, these models have identical specs as their all-electric correspondents listed above.

Buying A Used Scissor Lift: 4 Questions You Should Ask https://buyfleetnow.com/news/buying-used-scissor-lift https://buyfleetnow.com/news/buying-used-scissor-lift#respond Wed, 18 Sep 2024 09:00:48 +0000 https://buyfleetnow.com/?p=13920

Buying A Used Scissor Lift: 4 Questions You Should Ask

Buying a new scissor lift or renting a lift for an extended period of time can be costly. Long lead times have also become an issue on many models. Buying a used scissor lift is a cost-effective alternative to renting or buying new. Not only will it save you money, but you can end up with a lift that’s ideal for your needs.

Make sure to ask the seller the following 4 questions to help ensure that you’re getting a good lift that has been properly maintained:

1. How has this scissor lift been maintained?

One benefit of buying a used lift from a rental yard, is that it’s pretty easy to find out if the lift has been properly maintained.

When asked how a piece of equipment is maintained, the seller should tell you that quarterly and annual inspections have been conducted. In addition, rental yards will inspect their machines before each rental to ensure their lifts are in good condition while on job sites.

Most companies do not provide years of service records because it can take a great deal of time to pull and reproduce sometimes hundreds of pages of records. Instead, request the most recent annual inspection report for the most up-to-date equipment details.

Scissor Lift Inspection Report

This inspection report will help you assess the condition of the lift

Inspection Report Checklist
buying a used scissor lift

2. What condition are the tires in?

Tires can be expensive to replace. While some wear and tear on the tires is fine, make sure the lift does not vibrate when moving as a result of the tires’ condition. Also check for any structural damage like flat spots, cracks, or bubbles in the sidewalls.

3. When were the batteries replaced, and how do you maintain them?

Batteries need to be replaced every few years; however, properly maintained batteries will last longer than batteries that aren’t maintained regularly. Batteries should be maintained by:

  • Charging them fully
  • Adding distilled water as needed
  • Watching for and cleaning any visible debris or corrosion
  • Measuring and retaining hydrometer readings
  • Verifying all connections are tight and secure

Ask the seller to send you photos of the batteries. Look for debris or any corrosion as a sign that it has not been properly maintained.

Note: If you’re buying a lift that’s priced under market value, it’s likely that you’ll need to replace the battery and perform additional repairs and maintenance.

4. Are there any leaks that cause puddling?

Minor leaks or “oil saturation” is not unusual on scissor lifts. However, any leaks that cause puddling should be acknowledged and addressed. Seals, control valves, cylinders, hydraulic hoses & filters, and loose nuts can all cause leaks.

Major leaks can be expensive and dangerous. For example, oil leaks can cause overheating, the oil can catch on fire, they can be an indicator of a bigger problem, and they can cause costly downtime.

Rough Terrain Scissor Lift For Sale https://buyfleetnow.com/news/rough-terrain-scissor-lift-for-sale https://buyfleetnow.com/news/rough-terrain-scissor-lift-for-sale#respond Wed, 18 Sep 2024 09:00:18 +0000 https://buyfleetnow.com/?p=14806

Rough Terrain Scissor Lift For Sale

For any project that requires working on a slope or an uneven surface, a Rough Terrain Scissor Lift (RT Scissor) is a go-to option. This type of scissor lift has leveling options and four-wheel drive, along with better traction and heavier weight capacities than an indoor scissor lift. And if you’re looking for a Rough Terrain Scissor Lift for sale, you’ve come to the right place.
Common Uses for a Rough Terrain Scissor Lift

RT scissor lifts are used to safely raise a contractor into the air for outdoor construction, exterior finishing, building maintenance, welding and more. They’re ideal for locations where the scissor lift will have to maneuver on rough terrain, such as a construction site. In addition to four-wheel drive, an RT scissor lift has reinforced tires to help prevent a flat. If your work site has gravel, mud, sand, grass or dirt on it, an RT scissor lift is the right choice. It’s also important to note that RT scissor lifts run on gas or diesel, so they’re not suitable for indoor work. (Battery operated scissor lifts are more suitable for indoor work.)

Many work sites are going to have an uneven slope or rough outdoor terrain, which means an RT scissor lift with a leveling feature is ideal for raising multiple workers or materials up to a higher level. Gradeability is one of the measurements used for rough terrain scissor lifts. The lift’s leveling feature can allow it to safely work on slopes from zero to 40 percent.

Rough terrain scissor lifts are also used for inspecting or repairing utilities, installing signs or billboards, landscaping work, and in railyards for loading and moving materials.

How Much Does a Rough Terrain Scissor Lift Cost?

A used rough terrain scissor lift for sale can be purchased for around $15,000 as of 2022. The age and hours of use on a used machine will obviously affect the purchase price. A new RT scissor lift can run as high as $75,000. Depending on how much the scissor lift is needed, it might be a better option for a company to rent one for short-term jobs.

Here are some examples of average rental prices for rough terrain scissor lifts in the United States, as of 2022. Prices vary by city and market conditions.

26-Foot Lift, Four-Wheel Drive, RT Scissor Lift:

  • $200 per day
  • $450 per week
  • $1,000 per month

32-Foot Lift, Four-Wheel Drive, RT Scissor Lift:

  • $225 per day
  • $550 per week
  • $1,000 per month

40-Foot Lift, Four-Wheel Drive, RT Scissor Lift:

  • $250 per day
  • $700 per week
  • $1,800 per month

50-Foot Lift, Four-Wheel Drive, RT Scissor Lift:

  • $390 per day
  • $700 per week
  • $2,250 per month

Can Scissor Lifts Be Used Outside?

Rough terrain scissor lifts were specifically designed to be used outdoors on construction sites or other types of work sites. They’re suitable for running on mud, gravel, dirt, grass, or other uneven or rough surfaces. Even though most RT scissor lifts are four-wheel drive, it’s still fairly easy to get them stuck in mud that is too wet or deep.

Engineers have only managed to create a scissor lift battery that lasts for eight hours. This is why the vast majority of RT scissor lifts are gasoline or diesel powered. Once the eight-hour charge runs down in the battery, the scissor lift has to be recharged for eight hours. If the scissor lift needs to be driven to your job site, you won’t even get a full eight-hour work day out of it before it needs to be recharged. For construction jobs that are working 12- or 16-hour shifts, the best solution is going to be a gas or diesel powered rough terrain scissor lift.

Indoor scissor lifts do come with battery-run options. These are more suitable for indoor work spaces, obviously, because they don’t emit exhaust fumes.

How Many Hours Does a Scissor Lift Last?

A scissor lift that is properly cared for and stays on a regular maintenance schedule can actually last for decades of service. Some companies report using scissor lifts that have lasted for 30 years of use.

Hours are calculated differently for scissor lifts when compared to forklifts or other types of equipment. On a forklift, for example, the clock is still running when the machine is idling. On a scissor lift, the clock only records hours when the machine is in motion. If the scissor lift is stationary and has lifted the workers and materials in the air, the clock stops running and those hours are not counted. Due to the way the hours are calculated, a well-maintained scissor lift can be expected to last up to around 5,000 hours.

How Much Weight Can a Scissor Lift Hold?

Indoor scissor lifts are often built to hold 500 to 1,000 pounds, but rough terrain scissor lifts more than double that. RT scissor lifts can lift multiple workers and materials up to 60 feet high, with a workspace area of up to ten feet. Genie manufactures RT scissor lifts that have an extension deck to provide even more space for workers. Many rough terrain scissor lifts are rated to lift up to 2,500 pounds safely. More workers and more materials means that jobs can be carried out even faster.

Can You Drive a Scissor Lift on Grass?

Yes, a rough terrain scissor lift can absolutely be driven on grass. The question you’re probably really wondering, though, is will a scissor lift leave ruts if I drive it across a client’s lawn? With the weight of an RT scissor lift, it is likely to do some damage if driven across a manicured lawn, especially if the lawn is wet or has a lot of morning dew on it. Many contractors and landscapers work around this issue by laying sheets of plywood on the ground and driving across those, to avoid damaging the lawn.
