Looking for a JLG scissor lift for sale? Fleet Up Marketplace offers a number of different models of electric and rough terrain scissor lifts on our website. JLG Industries was one of the first aerial lift companies founded in the US, back in 1969, and it has five manufacturing plants in America. Its main headquarters is in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania.

How Much Does a JLG Scissor Lift Cost?

The industry-wide average for new 19′ scissor lift is between $10,000 and $15,000. The tallest scissor lifts with a reach between 35 and 60 feet can range from $20,000 all the way up to $75,000. While those are industry-wide averages, the price of JLG scissor lifts all fall within those ranges.

Because of the up-front costs for a scissor lift, a business might decide to buy a used one. We have used JLG scissor lifts for sale that are, in some cases, less than $10,000 for a model with minimal hours and with only a few years’ use on them.

Which is Better? JLG vs. Genie?

It’s really tough to choose between JLG and Genie scissor lifts, because they are both great machines. The only difference between comparable models often comes down to just a few inches. For example, the Genie GS-1930 has a maximum platform height of 19′, while the JLG 1930ES can raise its platform to 18’9″ — a difference of just 3 inches. Both companies even offer comparable warranties.

Choosing between a Genie scissor lift for sale and a JLG really comes down to a couple of different points. Consumer Reports says that Genie scissor lifts are more reliable and therefore could require maintenance less often than a JLG. However, JLG’s machines generally have a greater weight capacity, which can increase workplace productivity and efficiency. The choice mainly comes down to which of those preferences you prefer: Better efficiency (JLG) versus less maintenance (Genie).

What Scissor Lifts Does JLG Make?

JLG makes a series of electric scissor lifts, electric rough terrain scissor lifts, engine-powered rough terrain scissor lifts, and its flagship DaVinci series electric scissor lift.

JLG Electric Scissor Lifts for Sale

JLG’s ES electric scissor lift series is designed with fast-charging batteries for increased job site productivity. What’s the Biggest JLG Scissor Lift?

The biggest scissor lift in JLG’s stable of machines is the diesel-powered RT5394. It has a maximum platform height of 53′ and a maximum weight capacity of 1,500 pounds. It has a ground clearance of 12″ and weighs in at 17,110 pounds with a full tank of fuel, plus its 32-gallon hydraulic reservoir.

Who Invented the JLG Lift?

The invention of the JLG lift is credit to John L. Landis, who founded the company in 1969. Landis was an inventor who built the first aerial lifts and hydraulic cranes. He also contributed to the invention of steel extension ladders for fire trucks in the 1950s.

How Safe Are Scissor Lifts?

Scissor lifts are designed to be as safe as possible for the workers operating them and using the lifts. With that being said, scissor lifts by their very nature can be dangerous if used improperly. It’s a matter of physics. A heavy load of materials and a worker(s) lifted high in the air is vulnerable to tipping over, especially if the scissor lift is bumped by another piece of moving equipment. The US Department of Labor notes that most construction site accidents that involve injury or death happen due to falls from aerial platforms (including scissor lifts).

Scissor lifts are also vulnerable to tip-overs in high winds. Other workplace accidents involving scissor lifts can include electrocution if a worker comes into contact with utility lines, and collapse of the platform due to machine failure or hydraulic failure.

OSHA sets workplace standards that all employers must meet when a scissor lift — or any other type of aerial platform — is used for the work site. All workers must be properly trained in workplace safety in regards to the scissor lift, whether they are in General Industry, Shipyard, or Construction fields.

Do You Need a License to Operate a Scissor Lift?

All employees must receive OSHA training and certification on the proper safe use of a scissor lift, which must be provided by the employer. However, there is no formal “license” that is issued in the United States for operating a scissor lift.

Can You Drive a Scissor Lift on the Road?

While a scissor lift could be driven on a road in a technical sense, this would not be practical or safe, and in many jurisdictions it might be illegal. The vast majority of scissor lifts have a maximum operating speed of 3.5 miles per hour with the platform fully lowered. By comparison, the average human can walk about 4 miles per hour. It would not make much sense to operate a scissor lift on a road, due to its incredibly slow speed. It would also create a hazard due to its low profile; other motorists might not see the scissor lift in time to stop.

The safest way to transport a scissor lift is on a flatbed truck or trailer. Occasionally, a job site may encompass property on both sides of a public road or street, in which case it could be faster to drive the scissor lift across the road. However, even in that scenario, you should check with local law enforcement and your insurance company before doing so.

How Long Does it Take to Charge a JLG Scissor Lift?

Most electric scissor lifts require at least 8 hours to charge after being used for an 8 hour work shift. That includes most of the scissor lifts designed by JLG.

However, JLG’s DaVinci Series AE1932 scissor lift is a rare exception to this rule. The rapid-charging capability of the DaVinci allows it to fully recharge in just two hours, greatly increasing job site efficiency and productivity.

Can You Use a Scissor Lift on Uneven Ground?

Rough terrain scissor lifts are designed to be operated on uneven ground. Other types of scissor lifts, such as indoor versions and slab scissor lifts, must be moved across and secured on a flat piece of concrete (or similar surface) before raising the lift. Many indoor scissor lifts only have a couple of inches of ground clearance, making it impossible to operate them on uneven ground.

Many rough terrain scissor lifts even have an auto-leveling feature, which allows them to be used on slopes of 7 degrees or less. Manufacturer specifications will list the maximum amount of slope that a rough terrain scissor lift can be operated on.

How Many Hours Does a Scissor Lift Last?

Hours on a scissor lift are only counted when the machine is in motion, and not necessarily when it is in use. If the platform is raised while the work is being done, no hours of operation are accumulating on the scissor lift. Due to this standard, used scissor lifts for sale tend to have lower hours on them than other pieces of equipment. Most scissor lifts are expected to have a lifespan of up to 1,000 hours of movement, if they are properly maintained.

Can Two People Be on a JLG Scissor Lift?

The smaller models of JLG scissor lifts are designed for one worker. Larger models can accommodate two or even more workers. It depends on the weight capacity and manufacturer specifications for the model being used.
