Genie Articulating Boom Lifts: Models, Specs and Prices
Last updated: October 2026
Genie’s Z-series articulating boom lifts use a jointed boom and jib to reach up and over obstacles that a straight telescopic boom can’t get around. The lineup runs from compact, narrow electric models with a 36 ft working height to the ZX-135/70, which reaches 141 ft.
This guide explains Genie’s model names, compares every current Genie articulating boom, covers electric, hybrid and engine-powered options, and lists new and used prices so you can pick the right machine.
In this guide:
How Genie Z-Boom Names Work
Genie articulating booms start with “Z” (or “ZX” for the largest model). Most names follow the pattern Z-height/reach:
- First number: the approximate platform height in feet. Add about 6 ft for working height.
- Second number: the approximate horizontal reach in feet. A Z-62/40 reaches about 62 ft high and 40 ft out.
- N: narrow, for tight indoor spaces.
- RJ: rotating jib, which swings the platform side to side.
- J: jib (on older models like the Z-45/25J).
- DC: all-electric (battery) power.
- FE: hybrid, with batteries plus a small diesel generator.
- IC: engine-powered (internal combustion).
- XC: Xtra Capacity, with a higher platform rating.
Some newer Genie models drop the reach number. For example, the Z-60/37 DC and FE are now sold as the Z-60 DC and Z-60 FE.

Genie Electric and Hybrid Articulating Booms
Genie’s electric (DC) and hybrid (FE) booms are built for indoor work, finished floors and job sites with emissions or noise limits.
- Narrow electric models (Z-30/20 N, Z-34/22 N, Z-40/23 N): 3 ft 11 in to 4 ft 11 in wide, so they fit through double doors and work in aisles, atriums and warehouses. RJ versions add a rotating jib for precise positioning.
- Z-34/22 DC: a wider (5 ft 8 in) electric version with the same height and reach as the Z-34/22 N.
- Z-45 DC and Z-45/25J DC: 51 ft working height on battery power. The newer Z-45 DC carries 660 lb.
- Hybrid FE models (Z-45 FE, Z-60 FE): run on batteries, with a small diesel generator that recharges them, so they can work indoors on battery power and outdoors on rough ground. The Z-60 FE reaches 65 ft 7 in.

Genie Engine-Powered Articulating Booms
Genie’s engine-powered booms have four-wheel drive, oscillating axles and higher ground clearance for rough construction sites.
- Z-34/22 IC: a compact 4WD boom with a 40 ft 7 in working height, available with a Kubota diesel or gas/LP engine.
- Z-45 XC: Genie’s Xtra Capacity 45 ft boom, rated for 660 lb unrestricted or 1,000 lb restricted, with a 49 hp diesel or dual-fuel engine.
- Z-62/40: 67 ft 11 in working height and 40 ft 9 in of reach. A tracked TraX version is also available.
- Z-80/60: 84 ft working height and 60 ft of reach for large commercial and industrial projects.
- ZX-135/70: Genie’s largest articulating boom, with a 141 ft working height, 69 ft 9 in of reach and a 600 lb capacity.

How to Choose a Genie Articulating Boom
- Height: measure the highest point you need to reach and pick a working height a few feet above it.
- Reach and up and over: if you need to reach over a roofline, equipment or a parapet, compare up and over clearance as well as horizontal reach.
- Indoor or outdoor: choose DC or narrow models for indoor slab work, FE hybrids for mixed indoor and outdoor work, and engine-powered models for rough terrain.
- Width and weight: check doorways, aisles and floor load limits before choosing a machine for indoor work.
- Capacity: most models carry 500 lb. If you need more people, tools or materials on the platform, look at the Z-45 DC, Z-45 FE or Z-45 XC.
If you need to reach straight out rather than up and over, a telescopic boom like the Genie S-60 XC gives more reach for the money.
Genie Z-62/40 vs. JLG 600AJ
The 60 ft class is the most popular articulating boom size. Here is how Genie’s models compare with JLG’s 600AJ.
| Model | Platform height | Horizontal reach | Up and over | Capacity | FleetNow used prices |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Genie Z-62/40 | 61 ft 11 in | 40 ft 9 in | 25 ft 7 in | 500 lb | $31,850 to $127,550 |
| Genie Z-60 FE | 59 ft 7 in | 36 ft 7 in | 24 ft 3 in | 500 lb | $47,100 to $85,300 |
| JLG 600AJ | 60 ft 7 in | 39 ft 9 in | 26 ft 7 in | 500 lb | $33,900 to $109,950 |
The Z-62/40 and 600AJ are close competitors. The Z-62/40 has slightly more height and reach, while the 600AJ reaches about a foot higher over obstacles. The Z-60 FE gives up some reach for hybrid power that can work indoors.

What to Check Before Buying a Used Genie Articulating Boom
- Hours and records: check the hour meter, service records and the last annual inspection.
- Boom and jib: look for cracked welds, bent sections and play in the boom, jib and platform pins.
- Hydraulics: check cylinders and hoses for leaks, and make sure the boom holds position without drifting down.
- Controls and safety systems: test every function from the platform and ground controls, emergency lowering, the tilt alarm and the load sensing system on newer models.
- Turntable: rotate fully and listen for grinding or rough spots in the swing bearing.
- Batteries (DC and FE): ask about battery age, check the charger, and run the machine through full functions without low-voltage warnings. On FE hybrids, also check that the generator starts and charges.
- Engine (IC, XC and larger models): look for hard starting, heavy smoke and warning lights, and ask for a fault code scan.
- Drivetrain and tires: drive in both directions, test the brakes and steering, check the oscillating axle on 4WD models, and look for tire chunking.
- Platform: make sure the gate closes properly, the lanyard anchors are intact and the decals and manual are present.

Genie Articulating Boom Lift FAQs
The first number is the approximate platform height in feet, and the second is the approximate horizontal reach in feet. A Genie Z-62/40 reaches about 62 ft high and 40 ft out. Letters after the numbers show options such as N (narrow), RJ (rotating jib), DC (electric), FE (hybrid) and XC (Xtra Capacity).
The Genie ZX-135/70 is the tallest, with a 135 ft platform height, a 141 ft working height and a 600 lb capacity.
The Genie Z-30/20 N is the smallest current model. It has a 30 ft platform height, a 36 ft working height and a narrow 3 ft 11 in width for indoor work.
The electric DC models, including the narrow Z-30/20 N, Z-34/22 N and Z-40/23 N, produce no emissions and are built for indoor work. FE hybrid models can also work indoors on battery power. Engine-powered models are meant for outdoor use.
XC stands for Xtra Capacity. The Genie Z-45 XC is rated for 660 lb unrestricted or 1,000 lb in restricted mode, compared with 500 lb on most other Genie articulating booms.
