JLG 600S Boom Lift: Specs, Price and Buying Guide

Last updated: October 2026

The JLG 600S is a 60 ft class telescopic boom lift. It reaches a 59 ft 8 in platform height (about 65 ft 8 in working height) and 50 ft 2 in of horizontal outreach, and it carries 600 lb unrestricted or 1,000 lb in restricted mode. It is one of the most common 60 ft booms in rental fleets, used for steel erection, exterior work and maintenance on taller buildings.

This guide covers the 600S’s specs and features, how it compares to similar lifts, OHR Rents mechanic ratings, what it costs new and used, and what to check before you buy one.

JLG 600S Key Features

  • Dual capacity rating: 600 lb across the full working envelope, or 1,000 lb in restricted mode for heavier loads of people, tools and materials.
  • 50 ft 2 in of outreach: about 10 ft more than a 60 ft articulating boom like the JLG 600AJ, for reaching far out over obstacles on the ground.
  • Faster ascent: JLG says current models reach full height more quickly than earlier versions.
  • Easier transport: JLG says two current 600S units fit on one truck without an overweight permit.
  • Four-wheel drive and oscillating axle: 45% gradeability and 8 in of axle oscillation for rough job sites.
  • ClearSky Smart Fleet: current models include telematics hardware and an LED motion/amber beacon as standard.
  • Platform power and packages: a platform AC outlet, plus optional SkyPower, SkyWelder, SkyGlazier and SkyGuard packages.

How the JLG 600S Compares

Here is how the 600S compares with Genie’s 60 ft telescopic boom, JLG’s 60 ft articulating boom and JLG’s 66 ft telescopic boom with a jib.

ModelTypePlatform heightHorizontal outreachCapacityFleetNow used prices
JLG 600STelescopic59 ft 8 in50 ft 2 in600 lb (1,000 lb restricted)$28,950 to $94,950
Genie S-60 XCTelescopic60 ft48 ft 7 in660 lb (1,000 lb restricted)$43,600 to $94,500

JLG 660SJTelescopic with jib65 ft 8 in57 ft 1 in550 lb (750 lb restricted)$23,900 to $102,500

The 600S and Genie S-60 XC are close matches, with the 600S offering slightly more outreach and the S-60 XC a little more unrestricted capacity. Choose the 600AJ when you need to reach up and over obstacles, and the 660SJ when you need more height and reach plus a jib. Older Genie S-60 units built before the XC version list on FleetNow for $24,900 to $42,900.

JLG 600S Mechanic Ratings

Three mechanics at OHR Rents, which services aerial equipment every day, rated the JLG 600S:

CategoryAverage Rating
Performance4.0 out of 5
Reliability4.3 out of 5
Serviceability4.3 out of 5

One mechanic gave it 5 out of 5 across the board, one gave it 4 out of 5 across the board, and one gave it 3 for performance and 4 for reliability and serviceability, for an overall average of 4.2 out of 5.

JLG 600S Pros and Cons

ProsCons
50 ft 2 in outreach is strong for a 60 ft boomNo jib, so it can’t reach up and over obstacles like the 600AJ
1,000 lb restricted capacity for heavier loads4 ft tailswing needs clearance next to walls and traffic
4WD and 45% gradeability handle rough job sitesAbout 21,500 lb, so it needs a heavy trailer to move
Very common in rental fleets, so parts, service and used units are easy to findSlow 3.8 mph drive speed on large sites
Strong reliability and serviceability ratings from OHR Rents mechanicsMany used units are older, high-hour former rental machines

Overall, the 600S is a proven, affordable 60 ft boom for jobs where the path to the work area is clear and outreach matters most.

Common Uses for the JLG 600S

  • Construction: steel erection, window installation, siding and exterior finishing on taller buildings.
  • Industrial and facility maintenance: reaching lighting, HVAC equipment, ductwork and overhead machinery in large plants and facilities with enough floor space and ventilation.
  • Installation work: installing signage, electrical wiring and ductwork at height (a standard 600S is not insulated, so keep a safe distance from power lines).
  • Film, TV and events: rigging lights, cameras and decorations for productions, concerts and festivals.

  • Hours and records: check the hour meter, service records and the last annual inspection.

  • Hydraulics: check cylinders and hoses for leaks, and make sure the boom holds position without drifting down.
  • Controls: test every function from the platform and ground controls, plus emergency lowering.
  • Safety systems: confirm the tilt alarm, foot switch, all-motion alarm and capacity indicator work.
  • Turntable: rotate a full 360 degrees and listen for grinding or rough spots in the swing bearing.
  • Drivetrain: drive in both directions, test 2-wheel and 4-wheel steering and the brakes, and check the oscillating axle.
  • Engine: look for hard starting, heavy smoke and warning lights, and ask for a fault code scan.
  • Tires: check foam-filled tires for chunking and uneven wear.
  • Platform: make sure the gate closes properly, the lanyard anchors are intact and the decals and manual are present.
