JLG 860SJ Operation Guide: Controls, Steering and Troubleshooting

The JLG 860SJ is an 86 ft telescopic boom lift with a 6 ft articulating jib, a 92 ft working height and 75 ft of horizontal outreach. This guide explains how the 860SJ’s controls work, how to steer and drive it, what its warning lights mean and what to check before each shift.
It’s based on JLG’s Operation and Safety Manual for the 800S and 860SJ (units built before serial number 0300182742). JLG 860SJ Ground Controls
The ground control station sits on the turntable. Use it to start the machine, run the daily function check and lower the platform in an emergency if the operator in the platform can’t. Ground controls override the platform controls.

Starting the engine: JLG says to start from the ground controls first. Turn the key to GROUND, pull out the emergency stop, wait for the glow plug light to go out on diesel units, then hold the start switch until the engine runs. Don’t crank for long periods. Let the starter cool for 2 to 3 minutes between tries. After warm-up you can shut down, turn the key to PLATFORM and start again from the platform.
JLG 860SJ Platform Controls
Nothing on the platform console works until you press the footswitch. Press it and choose a function within 7 seconds, or the enable light goes out and you have to release and press it again. Releasing the footswitch cuts power to the controls and applies the drive brakes. Never block or modify the footswitch.

All levers and switches should spring back to neutral when you let go. If a function keeps moving after you release the control, release the footswitch or push the emergency stop, and don’t use the machine until it’s repaired.
JLG 860SJ Steering Modes
Units with four-wheel steering have a Steer Select switch on the platform console with three modes.

If the rear wheels get out of line, drive with the rear wheels pointed forward in crab or coordinated mode to bring them back in line, then return the switch to center.
Driving the JLG 860SJ With the Boom Raised
- Check boom position first: with the boom over the rear axle, the drive and steer controls work in the normal direction. With the boom over the front axle, they’re reversed.
- Drive orientation system: on equipped units, a light comes on when the boom is swung past the rear tires. Press and release the override switch, then within 3 seconds move the drive control toward the matching arrow on the chassis.
- Slower speeds at height: drive speed drops automatically when the boom is raised above horizontal or extended past a set length. If the high speed settings still work with the boom above horizontal, stop using the machine and have it checked.
- Surfaces: only drive with the boom above horizontal on smooth, firm, level ground. Stay at least 2 ft from holes, drop-offs and debris.
- Grades: don’t exceed the grade on the serial plate, and don’t drive on side slopes over 5 degrees. Use the torque setting on grades and switch to low speed before stopping.

JLG 860SJ Capacity and Stability Limits
The 860SJ has two capacity zones. You can carry up to 750 lb with the boom at shorter lengths and higher angles (the restricted zone), and up to 500 lb anywhere in the full working envelope (the unrestricted zone). Switches on the boom track its length and angle, and the capacity light on the platform console shows which rating applies in the current position.
- Check the capacity decal and the capacity light before loading the platform, and include people, tools and materials in the total.
- Don’t operate in winds over 28 mph (12.5 m/s).
- Only raise the boom above horizontal on a firm, level surface with correct tire pressure and all systems working.
- The machine is least stable with the boom fully raised or fully extended and the turntable swung 90 degrees to the side.
- Wear a full-body harness with a lanyard attached to an approved anchor, one person per anchor.
- The machine isn’t insulated. Keep at least 10 ft from power lines up to 50 kV, and add 1 ft for every additional 30 kV.
JLG 860SJ Daily Pre-Start Checks
JLG calls for a pre-start inspection before each shift or whenever the operator changes, a frequent inspection every 3 months or 150 hours, and an annual inspection no more than 13 months apart.
Pre-start inspection:
- Look for leaks, damage and loose or missing parts
- Decals and capacity placards are in place and readable
- Operator and safety manuals are in the storage box
- Battery terminals and charge
- Fuel level
- Engine oil at the full mark
- Hydraulic oil level
- Footswitch works and isn’t blocked or modified
- Controls return to neutral when released
- Boom, turntable and swing drive
- Wheels, tires, drive motors and brakes
- Cylinders, hoses and limit switches
- Tie rods and steering spindles
- Platform rotator and platform gate
Function check (no load in the platform):
- From the ground controls, run every function, check the limit switches and auxiliary power, and confirm the emergency stop shuts everything off.
- From the platform, run every function and confirm the emergency stop works.
- With the boom stowed, drive up a grade within the machine’s rating and confirm the brakes hold.
- Check that the tilt alarm works.

JLG 860SJ Warning Lights and Troubleshooting

About JLG fault codes: on 860SJ units covered by this manual, the malfunction light only tells you that a code has been set. The code itself is read with a JLG analyzer, and the meanings are in the service manual. JLG says on-machine code displays are only available on newer models, so check your machine’s manuals for the procedure on your unit.
Using Auxiliary Power on the JLG 860SJ
If the engine stops with the platform raised, the auxiliary pump can still move the boom. It works only with the engine off. Hold the Engine Start/Auxiliary Power switch down for as long as you need the pump, and run one function at a time. Functions move more slowly than normal.
The auxiliary pump runs main lift, telescope and swing, so you can bring the platform down from either the platform or the ground controls. Ground controls override the platform, so a trained person on the ground can lower the platform if the operator can’t. Follow the emergency procedures section of the manual on your machine.
Transporting and Towing the JLG 860SJ
- Trailer: JLG calls for a step-deck or single-drop trailer. At about 36,000 lb, plan for heavy-haul equipment and check permit rules.
- Loading: stow the boom in its rest, lock the turntable, empty the platform and remove loose items. Load with the boom and platform toward the truck. With the boom over the front wheels, the drive and steer controls are reversed. Don’t swing the turntable on the trailer.
- Tie-down: secure the chassis and the platform with chains or straps rated for the load, using the marked tie-down points.
- Lifting: only lift at the designated lift points, with the boom stowed and the turntable locked. Get the machine’s weight from the serial plate, JLG or a scale.
- Towing: emergency use only, at no more than 5 mph and on grades no steeper than 25%. Disengage the drive hubs first. The machine has no towing brakes and can’t be towed on the highway.
- Never let anyone ride in the platform while the machine is towed, lifted or hauled.

JLG 860SJ Operation FAQs
JLG recommends starting from the ground controls first. Turn the key switch to GROUND, pull out the emergency stop, wait for the glow plug light to go out on diesel units, and hold the start switch until the engine runs. After warm-up, you can turn the key to PLATFORM and start from the platform console with its emergency stop pulled out.
Common causes are the footswitch timing out (you have 7 seconds after pressing it to choose a function), an emergency stop pushed in, the key switch in the wrong position, or the drive orientation light being on with the boom swung past the rear wheels. If a warning light such as tilt or malfunction is on, deal with that first.
It means the control system has set a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). On older 860SJ units the code is read with a JLG analyzer, and the service manual explains it. The light also flashes on for 2 to 3 seconds at key-on as a bulb check.
With the engine off, hold the Engine Start/Auxiliary Power switch down to run the auxiliary pump, then lower and retract the boom one function at a time. This works from the platform or the ground controls. Follow the emergency procedures in the manual on your machine.
Units with four-wheel steering have three modes: 2-wheel front steer for normal driving, crab steer to move diagonally along walls and aisles, and coordinated steer for the tightest turns.
